Ecological practice reconfigures the relationship between artist, institution, and public. Artists and curators no longer operate as the sole producers of meaning within the exhibitionary, while audiences are no longer understood merely as spectators — rather, there is a diversification of roles. … In this sense, exhibitions resemble what Lynn Margulis described about life itself: “Life on earth is more like a verb. It repairs, maintains, re‐creates, and outdoes itself.”

How do exhibitions shape relationships between institutions, participants, and publics? Published in 2024, “Curating as Governmental Practices” develops the concept of the post-exhibitionary complex: an understanding of exhibitions as social and governmental constellations rather than neutral spaces of representation. Through the case studies of Philadelphia Assembled and documenta fifteen, the research examines the possibilities and contradictions of participation, situated knowledge production, and commoning in contemporary curatorial practice.
